it in those swing states. and that's because mitt romney played defense a lot of the first half of this year. whether it was in the primaries or in may, when the primary was finally over, and the obama campaign really started to hit him hard on his bain record. there hasn't an opening or an effective way for him to articulate a vision to turning the economy around. and it shows in the poll numbers. >> lynn, if governor romney can't hang this economy over the president's neck in the next three or four weeks, is there a chance he can beat him? >> of course there is one big blooper from obama, and the mistake may certainly change the trajectory of the campaign. but garrett made a very good point. i want to quickly build on another reason why obama might have dealt with housing today. he's doing his debate prep in a suburb of las vegas. where is he now that it's hard hit? so, again, this is another reason -- a reason he's camped out there, deliberately, so to try to bolster his support in nevada. and again, i think he's just prophylactically building a community around himself, dealing with hous

here? >> well, you know, i think the president, in his defense, very hard working person, he was on the phones to mohamed morsi after our embassy was attacked in cairo two weeks ago, working, of course, also on the phone to prime minister netanyahu the night before that, so the president's engaged and leading the united states in the world. the symbolism is important as you are inferg and would have been been better if the president would have been able to have a few bilateral meetings with the top leaders, leaders of the middle east in crisis, but there's no question that he's on top of his game and he's had a very successful run at foreign policy over the last three and a half years and it's interesting, andrea, to see that foreign policy has made a real comeback, right in the heart of this political campaign right now, everything from the middle east crises to the iran problem with israel and with us, and, of course, china as a scapegoat for both candidates really, and i think it's important that we continue this discussion of foreign policy as the debates approach over th

're not in complete denial. but you do hear a lot of defensiveness from the romney camp, a lot of sort of see no evil, refusal to admit that things are actually as bad as they are, a lot of sort of from the audiences at these events as well, the romney supporters you hear a lot of blaming the media for the condition that he's in. and you know, it really seems like unless they are more willing to admit the hole they're in they're going to have trouble getting out of it. >> i'd like to know what they are saying in private. do you have any intel on that? or is it still private? >> well, just that they can see what's happening. they know that it's not all roses and sunshine. they don't really believe that they are secretly winning and there's actually been some kind of conspiracy to cover it up. >> susan, we have mitt romney who's down there in the state of north carolina where there's a 9.7% unemployment. he's down in nevada where there's a 12.1% jobless rate. would you think this is where the misery index would be the highest? and with mr. romney still being behind, do you deduce that something's wrong

and out every possession. the president is playing preevent defense but people like charles krauthammer are frustrated because they don't see a reaction to being behind in some sort of change. be angry. be a fighter. go big. whatever it is. they have to do something different i think in the expectation of the conservative press or people are going to start turning on them. >> yeah. joe, the debates, is that one area where he actually might do well? >> i think he'll do well in the debates. he is a very good debater. the president's own people will say, and they're not spinning, that the president's not that great in debates. he lost the majority of the debates to hillary clinton back in 2008. he is not good at boiling things down to sound bites and delivering a punch line. but sam stein, there is, though, a real concern among conservatives. you know, two weeks ago when i started, the huffington post picked up my comments. >> as always. >> early on. at that point i said oh, my god it's getting late. >> yeah. >> it's getting late. then "the wall street journal", peggy noonan and others fol
